Drugs of abuse affect the brain in such a dramatic
way that the brain must try to adapt. One way the brain compensates is to
reduce the number of dopamine receptors at the synapse. As a result, after the
user has "come down," they will need more of the drug next time they
want to get high. This response is commonly referred to as tolerance. As the
brain continues to adapt to the presence of the drug, regions outside of the
reward pathway are also affected. Brain regions responsible for judgment,
learning and memory begin to physically change or become
"hard-wired." Once this happens, drug-seeking behavior is driven by
habit, almost reflex. This is how a drug user becomes transformed into a drug
addict. When a person uses drugs, the brain learns to function in the presence
of those drugs. When the person quits using drugs, the brain doesn't
immediately start to function the way it did before the drug use.
It is amazing, yet very scary to know what drugs are capable of. It may seem to some that using one of these substances one time won’t make any difference, but when you look at the research data and automatic effects drugs have on the brain, it should be something everyone should think twice about doing. As mentioned above, the brain is dramatically affected and therefore the brain has to go to certain extremes to try to adapt and cope with what is occurring. The tolerance aspect of drug use is even more dangerous. This shows the addictive nature of such drugs and I liked how you explained what occurs after drug use and abuse. People should try to avoid these dangerous substances and be informed of the consequences. Your explanation of the cognitive consequences really highlighted the danger and invasive nature of these drugs.
ReplyDeleteYes it is very scary to know that certain chemicals composed together can make such an effective drug, that is for good as well as to harm the body of an individual. It is amazing how we humans loose our senses by consuming drugs. Also the way the brain is affected by the synaptic transfusion of the particular neurotransmitters is amazing. The way an individual gets addicted and the brain request for more is unexplainable and very interesting to observe.
